New Jersey first responders soccer pros will face an equally ambitious local civilian team for the first-ever USSH Community Cup to be held at the New York Red Bull arena on Saturday, October 7. Part of a special double header match, the NYRB team squares off against the Vancouver White Caps FC at 5:00 pm followed by the USSF charity match. Proceeds from the match will support the charitable aims of the 501c3 non-profit that helps with community fitness initiatives as well as aids first responder families in times of crisis.
“The US Soccer Heroes is all about building bridges using soccer,” explained USSH founder and director of coaching, Alex Lalaoui. The USSF “A” licensed coach who has been running The Soccer Learning Center training academy for 16 years observed the rift in the first responder community and the general public as of late and wanted to improve communication while having fun. “When you put folks on the soccer field together, remarkable things begin to happen,” Lalaoui said. “Players all become focussed on the ball and the goal – not politics or perceptions – it’s a great way to help and heal.”
The first responder team represents a wide variety of law enforcement officers and firefighters from across New Jersey representing local, state, and national jurisdictions. The civilian team is made up of a formidable combination of players from every walk of life in the state.
When asked which team holds the competitive advantage, Lalaoui isn’t telling. “This is our first time out on the pitch with first responders facing civilians,” he explained. “There are really good players on both sides so it’s anyone’s match at this stage of the game.”
